“As the Athletic Director and former wrestling coach at Rancho Buena Vista High School I am very aware of the dangers of communicable skin diseases. Our wrestling mats are in use from 7:30am – 8:00 pm with P.E. aerobics and dance classes as well as 3 levels of high school practices culminating with a youth club wrestling practice. We have always washed our mats daily but with so much usage it seemed inadequate for disease prevention. This off-season we decided to take a proactive approach to prevention.
We contracted SafeMat to spray our mats with a chemically active vinyl coating that kills fungal, viral, and bacterial disease including MRSA. The results up to this point have been outstanding! We have had zero Physical Education classroom incidents, very minimal youth club incidents, and greatly reduced incidents on the high school team. We have not had an athlete miss a competition due to a skin violation. I feel confident that our room is safe and that the small number of incidents that have occurred are due to competitions at other sites. We feel we have done our part in making our wrestling room a healthy environment.”
